A fire, started when occupants left their luggage too close to a heater, destroyed a room at a Highway 101 motel Saturday morning, according to the Newport Fire Department.

The fire destroyed the room at the motel in the 600 block of South Coast Highway, fire department spokesman Chris Rampley said.
