How Does Snow Impact Our Fire Season?

There is a “Winter Storm Watch” in effect for the Pacific Northwest this weekend! How much snow we get this winter can actually impact our fire season later this year.

Snow that packs during the winter, melts in the spring when temperatures get warmer. The melting snow provides dry areas with a much needed water supply that can help forests stay protected during fire season. This means the more snowfall we get, the more likely we are to have a lighter fire season.

Of course, there are variables to this like there is with everything. If we have heat waves and the snow melts quickly, then it’s a different story.

Either way we are excited for some snow to come and hope everyone stays safe out there!
